How a Claude usage reset works

By Claude Resets · Updated

A Claude usage reset is the moment your allowance comes back. Paid plans run two scheduled clocks, and Anthropic sometimes adds an early Claude usage reset for many people at once.

This page is about those refills, not about how large the caps are. Cap size is [Claude usage limits](/claude-usage-limits). Whether another early Claude usage reset looks close is [will Claude reset](/will-claude-reset).

Two clocks in a Claude usage reset

A Claude usage reset on a paid plan follows two clocks at once. Chats, Claude Code and Cowork share one allowance, so they share both. A message needs room on both clocks.

Claude usage reset on the 5-hour window

The window opens with your first message, not on a global hour. That Claude usage reset refills the session five hours later, whether you hit the cap early or at the end. Idle time does not bank leftover room. The next message opens a new window.

Anthropic has not published a message count for one window. Opus spends the window faster than Sonnet, so the next Claude usage reset comes sooner, and a long thread costs more per reply than a fresh one. Paid plans had the 5-hour allowance doubled in May 2026.

Claude usage reset on the weekly limit

The weekly Claude usage reset is a fixed local time on your account, every seven days. Settings → Usage may show “Resets Friday 4:00 PM”. A teammate’s Claude usage reset can fall on another day. The clock is per account.

Fable can show a separate weekly meter with the same refill time as the main weekly Claude usage reset. Officially the weekly refill is once every seven days. Some people have logged gaps closer to 72 hours. Anthropic has not confirmed a second weekly Claude usage reset.

When a Claude usage reset actually hits

Read the limit message before you guess which Claude usage reset you are on. A weekday means the weekly cap. A clock time alone, such as “resets 5pm”, usually means the 5-hour Claude usage reset.

Weekly caps landed in August 2025, on top of the 5-hour window. A further weekly increase on paid plans was reported in September 2026. Those change the size of the cap. They are not a Claude usage reset. The dated rule log is Claude limit changes.

Where to see your Claude usage reset time

Claude prints both times. You do not need a guess for your own Claude usage reset.

  1. 01On the web or in Claude Desktop, open Settings → Usage. The weekly Claude usage reset is the “Resets …” line under the weekly meter.
  2. 02In Claude Code, type /usage. The same 5-hour and weekly Claude usage reset times appear there, because the products share one allowance.
  3. 03The session message names the 5-hour Claude usage reset, for example “5-hour limit reached · resets 5pm”.
  4. 04The reset time calculator turns each Claude usage reset time into a countdown. What you type stays in the browser.

A normal Claude usage reset vs a surprise one

A normal Claude usage reset needs no post. The session refills five hours after it opened. The week refills at your account’s time. Both will still be there next week.

A surprise Claude usage reset is Anthropic refilling people early, often both meters at once. The log has 14 from April 16 to September 22, 2026, about one every 12 days, and none in August. Causes include the July 3–8 outages (refill on July 10), the April 16 long-context bug, the June sub-agent bug, Claude Code quality regressions on April 23, and the Fable 5, Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 launches. Some dates give no reason. Rows are in the reset history.

Another surprise Claude usage reset is a forecast, not a row in that table. Will Claude reset shows the live odds. The tracker homepage shows the same odds at full size.

What a surprise Claude usage reset does not change

It does not move your weekly time, and it does not resize the caps. Since Opus 5.5, one surprise Claude usage reset arrived as a “Reset for free” card for Pro, Max and Team, spent when you choose. That card was dated to expire on October 22, 2026.

Who a surprise Claude usage reset covers

Many cover all plans or all subscribers. Not every surprise Claude usage reset does. September 4, 2026 was weekly and Max only, after Fable 5.1. June 19, 2026 reached about 3% of Pro and Max. The free plan has not received a reset card.

FAQ

Does a Claude usage reset happen every 5 hours?

+

Only on the session clock, and only after a window opens. That Claude usage reset is five hours after the first message of the window, not one clock time for every account.

Is the weekly Claude usage reset the same for everyone?

+

No. The weekly Claude usage reset is per account, in your local time, under Settings → Usage. Two people on one plan can refill on different days.

Does Claude Code have its own Claude usage reset?

+

No. Chat, Claude Code and Cowork share one 5-hour Claude usage reset and one weekly Claude usage reset. A reset card pressed on the web refills Claude Code too.

Can I force a Claude usage reset myself?

+

Only with a “Reset for free” card, if one is still there. Otherwise the next Claude usage reset is the scheduled refill, or an early one from Anthropic. You cannot move the weekly time.
