Claude usage limit reached
By Claude Resets · Updated
“Usage limit reached”, “5-hour limit reached · resets 5pm”, “Your limit will reset at 7pm”. If Claude has just stopped you, this page explains why the limit reached message appears, why it can show up after a single prompt, and how to get going again.
Why you see “limit reached”
Claude does not count messages; it counts usage, which grows with conversation length, attached files, the model and the effort level. That is why limit reached can arrive after three long replies one day and thirty short ones the next.
Claude chats, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all draw from the same allowance. A long Claude Code session in the morning can trigger limit reached in the browser in the afternoon.
Limit reached after one prompt
When limit reached shows up that early, it is usually one of three things: the chat already carries a huge history, you attached large files or a whole codebase, or your 5-hour window was nearly used up by another app. Starting a fresh chat often fixes it.
Limit reached right after upgrading
An upgrade raises your allowance, but a message that names a day means the weekly cap. If limit reached keeps showing, sign out and back in, then check Settings → Usage to confirm the new plan is active.
Limit reached but I have usage credits
If you see limit reached with credits on, remember usage credits only kick in if the feature is enabled and your monthly spend cap has room. Check both in Settings → Usage.
Which limit reached message did you get?
Read the reset time in the limit reached message. A clock time alone (“resets 5pm”) is the 5-hour session window. A day and time (“resets Fri 4:00 PM”) is the weekly limit. A “chat length limit reached” message is a different problem entirely: the context window, fixed by starting a new chat.
What to do when a limit is reached
When you see limit reached, try these, fastest first:
- 01Use a saved “Reset for free” card if Settings → Usage shows one.
- 02Start a new chat and paste only what matters, instead of dragging the whole history.
- 03Switch to a lighter model such as Sonnet, which takes far longer to hit limit reached.
- 04Turn on usage credits to keep working at API rates.
- 05Wait for the reset time shown in the limit reached message.
- 06Check our reset odds: Anthropic has reset limits for everyone 14 times since April 2026.
Avoid limit reached next time
Keep chats focused, summarize long threads into a new one, save Opus for hard problems, and plan heavy work right after your weekly reset. Those habits push limit reached further away than any trick.
FAQ
Why does Claude say limit reached when I barely used it?
+
Usage is measured by tokens, not messages. Long chats, big attachments and Opus all use much more per message, and Claude Code shares the same allowance.
How long until limit reached goes away?
+
Until the time printed in the message: at most five hours for the session window, or your weekly reset time for the weekly cap.
Can Anthropic clear limit reached for everyone?
+
Yes. Anthropic has reset limits for all subscribers many times in 2026, usually after outages or launches. See the dated sources.
