If you run Opus all day, you hit the Opus limit long before friends who use Sonnet. Here is why the Opus limit feels so much tighter, whether Opus has a separate cap, and how to get more work out of it.
Why the Opus limit arrives first
Anthropic’s own guidance for Claude Code is blunt: Opus costs several times more per turn than Sonnet, and Sonnet more than Haiku. Your plan allowance is the same whichever model you pick, so choosing Opus simply spends it faster. That is what people call the Opus limit: not a separate cap, just a faster drain.
Is there a separate Opus limit?
No. There is no standalone Opus limit. Opus shares one pool with the other standard models: the 5-hour session and the weekly limit. The one exception is Fable, which has its own rules and meter; see Fable limits.
Does the Opus limit switch me to Sonnet automatically?
Not by threshold. Hitting the Opus limit simply means your allowance is used up. Your default model depends on how you signed in and your organisation’s settings, and you change it yourself with /model.
Opus limits on each plan
Opus limits scale with your plan’s allowance. Max 5x gives five times Pro’s per-session usage and Max 20x gives twenty times, so a Max 20x user can run Opus far longer before the Opus limit bites. All plans also have a weekly limit that applies across all models, so the weekly Opus limit is your weekly limit.
Stretch your Opus limit
Anthropic’s suggested model split keeps you under the Opus limit longer:

- 02Switch to Opus when you are genuinely stuck on a hard problem.
- 03Use Haiku for quick mechanical work like renames or formatting.
- 04Keep Opus sessions short and focused; long histories make every Opus turn cost more and bring the Opus limit closer.
- 05Save a “Reset for free” card for the day you need Opus past your Opus limit.
