A reset refills your limits once. A limit change moves the limits themselves. This page logs every Claude limit change we can date, so you can tell whether your allowance really shrank or you just had a heavy week.
Claude limit changes, newest first
Each limit change below is dated to the day it took effect where known. Promotions that ended are included, because their end is a limit change too.
- 01Sep 22, 2026: Opus 5.5 launches with higher 5-hour limits on paid plans, plus a one-time “Reset for free” card.
- 02Sep 14, 2026: a permanent increase to weekly limits on paid plans was reported.
- 03Aug 31, 2026: a summer boost to weekly limits ends (reported).
- 04Jul 19, 2026: the Fable 5 promotion ends. Max and premium seats keep up to 50% of weekly limits for Fable; Pro and standard seats need usage credits.
- 05May 6, 2026: 5-hour limits doubled on paid plans and peak-hour throttling removed.
- 06Mar 13–28, 2026: a promotion doubles limits outside peak hours and on weekends.
- 07Aug 28, 2025: weekly caps added on top of the 5-hour window for Pro and Max.
Limit change vs reset
A reset, like the 14 logged since April 2026, only refills today’s meters; your limits stay the same size. A limit change alters how big the 5-hour window or weekly cap is from then on. Mixing the two up is why “did Claude cut my limits?” threads appear after every quiet week.
How to spot a limit change yourself
To spot a limit change, watch Settings → Usage for a week. If the same kind of work fills the meter noticeably faster or slower, a limit change is the likely reason. New lines in that screen, such as a separate weekly limit for Fable, are also a limit change in disguise.
When a limit change is real, Anthropic usually announces the limit change through @claudeai, @ClaudeDevs or its help center. Promotions tend to arrive with launches and end on a fixed date.
