The free plan is a good way to try Claude, but the free limits run out quickly on real work. Here is how Claude free limits work, why nobody can give you an exact number, and what changes when you pay.
How Claude free limits work
Claude free limits use the same 5-hour session idea as paid plans: your window opens with your first message and refills five hours later. When you hit the free limit, Claude shows the time it refills.
Anthropic gives paid plans priority access to Claude during high-traffic periods, so free users are the first to feel busy hours. Many users report that the free limit feels tighter at peak times; Anthropic does not publish how much it moves.
How many messages is the free limit?
Anthropic does not publish a number. Claude counts tokens, not messages, so a free limit that allows dozens of short questions may allow only a few long replies with attachments. Third-party guides quote 15 to 40 messages per session; treat that as a rough range, not a rule.
Is there a daily free limit?
Not a fixed daily one. The free limits refill on the rolling 5-hour window, so the time of day you start matters more than the date.
What the free limits leave out
Free limits are not only about volume. Claude Code, usage credits and the “Reset for free” cards that paid accounts received with Opus 5.5 are not part of the free plan, and the newest, heaviest models are reserved for paid plans. Early resets that Anthropic hands out after outages are aimed at subscribers too.
Stretch the free limit
A few habits make Claude free limits last longer:
