Claude usage credits

Usage credits let a paid Claude plan keep working after you hit your limits, instead of waiting for the next refill. Here is what usage credits cost, how to set them up safely, and when they are worth it compared with waiting for a Claude reset.
What Claude usage credits are
Usage credits are prepaid, pay-as-you-go usage on top of your subscription. Once your 5-hour or weekly limit runs out, Claude switches to spending usage credits instead of stopping. They are available on Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x; Team and seat-based Enterprise plans have their own credit settings.
Usage credits are billed at standard API rates, so the cost depends on the model and how much text goes in and out. Opus costs much more per message than Sonnet.
How to turn on usage credits
It takes a couple of minutes on the web:
- 01Open claude.ai and go to Settings → Usage.
- 02Under usage credits, press Enable and add a payment method.
- 03Set a monthly spend cap: the most you allow usage credits to cost in a month.
- 04Press Add funds to prepay a balance. Optionally turn on auto-reload.
Subscribed through the mobile app?
If you pay for Claude through the iOS or Android app, usage credits can only be enabled and bought on the Claude web app.
Caps, auto-reload and running out
The monthly spend cap is your safety net: usage credits stop once it is reached, and you can change it any time. Auto-reload tops up your usage credits when the balance falls below a threshold you choose. There is also a daily redemption limit of $2,000.
When the balance hits zero and auto-reload is off, Claude blocks again until you add more usage credits, turn the feature off, or your plan limit refills.
Usage credits vs waiting for a reset
Usage credits cost real money; a reset is free. If your 5-hour window refills within the hour, waiting is usually smarter. If a deadline cannot slip and your weekly limit is days away, usage credits are the fastest way through.

Usage credits and Fable
On Pro and standard Team seats, Fable models always run on usage credits. Max and premium seats can spend up to half of their weekly limit on Fable before usage credits kick in.

How much do Claude usage credits cost?

Usage credits are charged at standard Anthropic API rates for the model you use, deducted from a prepaid balance.
Do usage credits expire or refund?

A reset does not refund usage credits you already spent. Check the billing screen for your balance and any expiry terms before buying large amounts.
Are usage credits the same as API credits?

No. Usage credits extend your claude.ai plan (chats, Claude Code, Cowork). API credits are bought separately in the Claude Console for developers.
