What the Claude Code limit message means

Claude Code does not have its own separate pool. Your Claude Code limit is the same plan allowance you use in Claude chats and Cowork, so a long chat in the browser eats into the Claude Code limit too. There are two ceilings behind every Claude Code limit message: a 5-hour session window and a weekly cap. The message tells you which one you hit and the local time it refills.

“5-hour limit reached · resets 5pm”

“You’ve hit your limit · resets Fri 4:00 PM”

A day name in a Claude Code limit message means the weekly cap. Each account has its own weekly reset time, so your teammate’s Claude Code limit may refill on a different day than yours.

“Approaching usage limit · resets at …”

A warning, not a stop. Finish the current task, commit your work and plan the next step before the Claude Code limit kicks in.

When does the Claude Code limit reset?

The normal Claude Code limit reset happens on its own: the session window after five hours, the weekly cap at your account’s weekly time. Type /usage inside Claude Code, or open Settings → Usage on the web, to see both reset times.

Five ways to get past a Claude Code limit

If you cannot wait for the Claude Code limit to refill, these are your options, cheapest first:

01Use a saved reset only if Settings → Usage shows one. The Opus 5.5 card expired at 11:59pm Pacific on October 22, 2026. A later card, pressed on the web or in Claude Desktop, refills the account, so Claude Code benefits too.
02Switch to a lighter model. Opus uses the Claude Code limit much faster than Sonnet. Run /model and pick a smaller model for routine edits.
03Trim the context. Long sessions hit the Claude Code limit sooner because they resend a lot of history. Start a fresh session or compact the conversation before big tasks.
04Turn on usage credits. Paid credits let you keep going after a Claude Code limit and are billed on top of your plan.
05Upgrade the plan. Max plans carry a much higher Claude Code limit than Pro if you hit the wall every week.

Check the Claude Code limit reset before you wait

Type /usage in the terminal, or open Settings → Usage on the web. Two times are listed. The earlier time is the Claude Code limit reset that stopped you. A clock time is the 5-hour session, at most five hours after its first message. A day name is the weekly cap, fixed per account and shared with chats and Cowork.

A maxed-out chat is a different problem. The Claude Code limit reset restores allowance. It does not clear a session that has filled its context window. Compacting, or starting a fresh session, is what frees that space. The Opus 5.5 “Reset for free” card, which could refill the account early, expired at 11:59pm Pacific on October 22, 2026. How to avoid hitting the Claude Code limit

Treat the Claude Code limit as a budget. Plan heavy work, like big refactors or test generation, right after your weekly reset. Keep one long session instead of many short ones that repeat the same setup. And keep an eye on the early warning so the Claude Code limit never lands in the middle of a migration.
