What the Claude Code limit message means

Claude Code does not have its own separate pool. Your Claude Code limit is the same plan allowance you use in Claude chats and Cowork, so a long chat in the browser eats into the Claude Code limit too. There are two ceilings behind every Claude Code limit message: a 5-hour session window and a weekly cap. The message tells you which one you hit and the local time it refills.

“5-hour limit reached · resets 5pm”

“You’ve hit your limit · resets Fri 4:00 PM”

A day name in a Claude Code limit message means the weekly cap. Each account has its own weekly reset time, so your teammate’s Claude Code limit may refill on a different day than yours.

A warning, not a stop. Finish the current task, commit your work and plan the next step before the Claude Code limit kicks in.

When does the Claude Code limit reset?

01Use a saved reset. If Settings → Usage shows a “Reset for free” card, activate it on the web or in Claude Desktop. It refills the account, so Claude Code benefits too.
02Switch to a lighter model. Opus uses the Claude Code limit much faster than Sonnet. Run /model and pick a smaller model for routine edits.
03Trim the context. Long sessions hit the Claude Code limit sooner because they resend a lot of history. Start a fresh session or compact the conversation before big tasks.
04Turn on usage credits. Paid credits let you keep going after a Claude Code limit and are billed on top of your plan.
05Upgrade the plan. Max plans carry a much higher Claude Code limit than Pro if you hit the wall every week.
