Claude usage limits, explained

Claude usage limits decide how much you can send before Claude asks you to wait. This page covers how the usage limits are built, how they reset, and what changed through 2026.
The two Claude usage limits
Every paid Claude plan has two usage limits stacked on top of each other. Both apply to Claude chats, Claude Code and Cowork together, because they all draw from one allowance.
The 5-hour session limit
A rolling window that starts with your first message and refills five hours later. It stops you from burning a whole week of usage limits in one afternoon.
The weekly usage limit
A cap on total usage across seven days, refilling at a fixed time for your account. Some models, such as Fable, carry their own separate weekly usage limit (Fable limits by plan).
What uses up your usage limits
Claude usage limits are not a flat message count. Bigger models cost more: Opus drains usage limits much faster than Sonnet. Long threads cost more per reply because the whole history is processed again. Files, images and tool calls in Claude Code add to the bill too.
Settings → Usage on claude.ai shows how far along both usage limits are, plus a breakdown by product, so you can see whether Claude Code or chat is eating your week.
How Claude usage limits reset
Normally the usage limits refill on their own: the session window after five hours, the weekly usage limit at your account’s weekly time. On top of that, Anthropic sometimes resets usage limits early for everyone, usually after an outage, a bug or a launch. We logged 14 of those early resets between April and September 2026.
Since the Opus 5.5 launch, some resets arrive as a “Reset for free” card that you keep and use when you choose.
Usage credits: going past the usage limits
Turn on usage credits in Settings → Usage and Claude keeps working after you hit your usage limits, billed at API rates on top of your plan. How usage credits work, in full.
How Claude usage limits changed in 2026
The usage limits have moved a lot. The biggest shifts:
- 01August 2025: weekly usage limits added on top of the 5-hour window.
- 02May 2026: 5-hour usage limits doubled on paid plans.
- 03September 2026: weekly usage limits raised again, plus “Reset for free” cards. Full dated log: Claude limit changes.

Do Claude usage limits differ by plan?

Yes. Max plans have much higher usage limits than Pro, and Team and Enterprise have their own. Anthropic publishes relative multiples rather than exact message counts.
Does the free plan have usage limits?

Yes, the free plan has tighter usage limits and has not received reset cards so far.
