Claude 5-hour limit
By Claude Resets · Updated
People search “Claude resets every 5 hours” because the 5-hour limit is the one you feel first. Here is how the Claude 5-hour limit really works and how to get more done inside each window.
How the Claude 5-hour limit works
The 5-hour limit is a rolling session window. It starts with your first message, not at a fixed hour on the clock. Everything you send in the next five hours counts toward that one 5-hour limit, across Claude chats, Claude Code and Cowork.
When the window closes, the 5-hour limit refills in full and a new window starts with your next message. If you stay idle for a day, nothing carries over; the 5-hour limit simply waits for you.
Does Claude reset every 5 hours?
Only if you keep using it. The 5-hour limit refills five hours after the window began. Send your first message at 9:00 and the 5-hour limit refills at 14:00, whether you hit it at 10:30 or 13:59.
Why the reset time looks odd
Claude shows the refill time rounded to your local clock, like “resets 5pm”. That time is tied to when your window opened, so two people on the same plan see different 5-hour limit times.
5-hour limit vs weekly limit
The 5-hour limit sits on top of a weekly cap. You can have room left in the 5-hour limit and still be blocked because the weekly cap is empty. The weekly cap refills at a fixed time for your account; see our weekly limit guide for how that works.
Rule of thumb: a day name in the message means the weekly cap, a clock time alone usually means the 5-hour limit.
How much fits in one 5-hour limit
Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count. How far a 5-hour limit goes depends on the model, the length of the conversation and any attached files. Opus burns a 5-hour limit far faster than Sonnet, and a 200-message thread costs more per reply than a fresh one.
Anthropic doubled the 5-hour limit on paid plans in May 2026, and launches like Opus 5.5 have come with higher 5-hour limits too.
Stretch every 5-hour limit
Small habits make the 5-hour limit last noticeably longer:
- 01Open the window on purpose. Send a short first message before a planned deep-work block so the 5-hour limit refills when you need it.
- 02Start fresh threads for new topics instead of dragging long history along.
- 03Use Sonnet for drafts and quick edits, and save Opus for the hard parts.
- 04Keep a saved “Reset for free” card for the day a 5-hour limit hits mid-deadline.
